Green Buildings
SAFE has been in the forefront of bringing "green architecture" principles to the attention of Salem's municipal building managers. These prinicples include ensuring that new construction is 1) energy efficiency and 2) uses the least toxic building materials available for all building projects.
With SAFE's assistance, the city received a $500,000 grant to improve energy efficiency at the new Carlton school through the use of solar panels, specially glazed windows, and optimal use of daylight. Well-designed green schools create healthy learning environments for our children and promote an ethic of conservation and low-impact use of our natural resources. The Carlton School opened in Fall 2004.
SAFE is currently working in partnership with Salem State College to sponsor a tour of the new Central Campus dormitories, the city's first truly green building. The dormitory is in the process of earning its green credentials as a Leadership in Environment and Energy Design (LEED) certified building.
