Climate Protection

Climate change is threatening our planet. Today, the global community recognizes that increased carbon in the atmosphere–released by burning fossil fuels for electricity, transportation, and industrial production–is causing changes in weather patterns around the world.

SAFE, since its inception in 2001, has focused on reducing our individual and collective carbon footprint. We have supported green energy projects in the city, educated Salem residents about energy efficient lighting and heating, promoted the state’s green electricity programs, and even planted trees.

We can all do our part. Find great tips in the US Department of Energy’s Energy Savers Booklet.

SAFE has also participated in actions promoted by the national organization 350.org.

350 PPM: Safety from Climate Crisis

To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million (“ppm”)to below 350 ppm. But 350 is more than a number—it’s a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.

350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis and push for policies that will put the world on track to get to 350 ppm.
