Salem Alliance for the Environment (SAFE) acknowledges the Pawtucket band of the Massachusett Tribe at Naumkeg as the original inhabitants and caretakers of this land and first people of Massachusetts. We recognize the importance of Salem, known as Naumkeag or “fishing grounds” or “place of eels”, as one of the original seats of Sagamore Wenepoykin, third son of Sachem Nanapashamet. We extend our gratitude as a tribute to the Massachusett Tribe who continue to honor and protect this land and its sacred places.
The Massachusett Tribe and their ancestors offer us an example as stewards of the environment having honed traditional ecological knowledge systems of reciprocity over thousands of years, we respectfully strive to follow their guidance in our work to protect the land, water, and air in and around Salem. It is with great care and a deep sense of responsibility that we tread as lightly as possible on this land we occupy.
We are mindful to keep environmental justice principles as a central tenet in our work to champion justice, equity, and repair for those members of our community who have suffered historically. We recognize the historical oppression and atrocities committed against the Massachusett Tribe and all Indigenous people who have shared and cared for this land. As a way to honor, respect, and offer reciprocity in our relationship with the Massachusett Tribe, we commit to: fostering the growth of our relationship; continuing to learn from the Tribe about their history and culture; sharing what we learn with all those we encounter; and working together with the Tribe to promote a just, equitable, and sustainable future for generations to come.
