SAFE works on a a range of environmental issues that affect our community. Currently much of our work focuses on energy conservation and green energy production. We worked with other local groups to eliminate coal-fired energy production at Salem Harbor Station, and are now closely monitoring the proposal for a natural gas plant. We are also supporting a wind turbine at Winter Island.
We have worked closely with the City to reduce the city’s carbon footprint through the introduction of solar powered trash compactors in city parks and LED light bulbs in our city traffic lights.
We also have supported key environmental legislation, including the Green Communities Act, that has made Massachusetts a national leader. In the 2012 legislative session, we are working to pass the updated bottle bill, which would significantly reduce waste in our state.
